What commercial deadwood removal involves

Deadwood is the most predictable tree hazard on a commercial property. Dead branches will eventually fall, and the only variables are when and what is underneath. Systematic removal over occupied areas is the single highest value tree maintenance activity on most commercial sites.

Why dead wood is the first priority

Of all tree work, dead wood removal has the clearest justification. A dead branch is going to come down. The only questions are when, and what is underneath.

Live branches fail occasionally and usually under load, in wind or rain. Dead branches fail on still days, without warning, which is what makes them disproportionately dangerous on a property where people park and walk.

It is also the cheapest tree work to justify in a budget, because the reasoning does not depend on appearance or long term planning. The branch is dead, it is over a parking stall, and it is coming down at some point.

Some dead wood is normal

A healthy mature tree always has some dead wood. Lower interior branches shaded out by the canopy above die naturally, and that is a tree doing what trees do.

What matters is where it is and how much. Dead wood in the lower interior is normal. Dead wood in the upper outer canopy is a signal, because that is where a tree invests most and gives up last.

A tree with increasing dead wood in the top, compared with the same tree a year earlier, is declining and needs looking at properly rather than just cleaning.

Size matters too. Small twigs are irrelevant. A specification usually names a threshold, commonly branches above an inch or two in diameter, so both parties know what is being bought.

Doing it without damaging the tree

Dead wood removal is low risk to the tree because the wood being removed is already dead. The risk is in how the cut is made at the boundary.

The living tissue at the base of a dead branch is already sealing it off. Cutting into that tissue opens a wound that was in the process of closing, which is the opposite of the intent.

So the cut goes just outside the collar, leaving the tree's own boundary intact. A crew removing dead wood by cutting flush is causing more harm than the dead branch was.

The other consideration is what happens to the wood. Where dead wood is the result of disease, it should leave the site rather than being chipped and spread as mulch on the property.

    Finished work is photographed. Any tree we want to watch is logged with a date to look at it again, so nothing gets lost between visits.

Frequently asked questions

How much deadwood is normal?

Some interior deadwood is natural as a tree sheds branches that no longer receive enough light. Deadwood in the upper and outer canopy is different and generally indicates a problem: root damage, water stress, disease, or decline. The location of deadwood tells you more than the quantity.

How urgent is deadwood removal?

It depends entirely on what is beneath. A dead limb over an unused perimeter can wait for the next scheduled cycle. The same limb over a parking stall or a building entrance is an immediate item, because the consequence of failure is a damaged vehicle or an injury.

Does deadwood removal help the tree?

It helps modestly by removing entry points for decay, but the primary benefit is risk reduction rather than tree health. If a tree is producing significant deadwood, the more important work is diagnosing why.
