What commercial controller programming involves

Controller programming determines when each zone runs, for how long, and how often. It is the highest leverage and lowest cost adjustment available on any irrigation system, and it is the thing most commonly left exactly as it was set the day the system was installed.

Programming by zone, not by percentage

The most common way a controller is adjusted is with a global percentage: everything up twenty percent for summer, everything down for winter. It is quick and it is wrong.

Zones do not scale together. A shaded courtyard bed and a sunny turf area have different curves through the year. Moving both by the same percentage keeps the shaded area over watered in every season.

Programming by zone means each zone has its own run time based on what it waters, its exposure, and its soil. It takes longer to set up once and produces a system that is right rather than uniformly approximate.

Cycle and soak, the free improvement

On a slope or on clay soil, a long irrigation cycle mostly runs off. The soil cannot absorb water as fast as it is being applied, so the surplus goes down the slope and into a gutter.

Cycle and soak splits the same total run time into shorter cycles with gaps between them. Each short cycle applies water at a rate the soil can take, and the gap lets it absorb before the next one.

The total water applied is identical. The proportion that reaches the root zone is much higher, which usually means the total can then be reduced.

It costs nothing but programming time and it is one of the few genuinely free improvements available in irrigation.

Keeping the programme once it is right

A carefully set programme has a way of quietly disappearing, and the causes are consistent.

A power cut on an older controller wipes the schedule and reverts to a default. Somebody runs a manual cycle and leaves the controller in manual. A valve gets replaced and the zone assignment changes without the programme being updated. A contractor changes and the new crew adjusts things without knowing why they were set that way.

Two habits prevent almost all of it. Record the programme as set, on paper and in the site file, so it can be restored rather than reinvented. And check the controller after every power interruption, valve replacement, and crew change.

Frequently asked questions

What is cycle and soak?

Instead of one long run, the zone runs several short cycles with soak time between them. It exists because soil can only absorb water at a certain rate. On clay soil or a slope, a single long run produces runoff across the hardscape while the root zone stays dry. Splitting it lets each cycle absorb before the next begins.

When should commercial irrigation run?

Early morning, generally in the few hours before sunrise. Evaporation is lowest, wind is usually calmest, and foliage dries as the sun rises. Evening watering leaves the canopy wet overnight, which is a leading contributor to turf disease. Midday watering loses a significant share to evaporation.

Is watering deeply and less often really better?

Yes, for established plantings. Frequent shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface where they dry out fast and become dependent on constant irrigation. Deeper, less frequent watering drives roots down, which makes plants far more resilient during heat events and any watering restriction.
