What zone balancing and optimization involves

Zone balancing corrects the physical reasons a zone waters unevenly: mismatched head types, wrong nozzles, pressure problems, and gaps in coverage. Until a zone applies water uniformly, no schedule can be correct, because the run time must always satisfy the driest spot in it.

What zone balancing actually means

Balancing a zone means making the water land evenly across it. A zone can run for its full cycle and still deliver three times as much water to one part as to another.

The measure is distribution uniformity, and it is found with catch cups placed across the zone during a run. The variation between them is the number that matters.

Poor uniformity is expensive in a specific way. The run time has to be long enough to satisfy the driest part, which means everywhere else gets far more than it needs. Improving uniformity lets the total run time drop without anything drying out.

Run time is set by the driest spot in the zone. Fix the uniformity and everywhere else stops being over watered.

What causes a zone to be out of balance

Uneven coverage usually comes from a small number of causes, and most of them are correctable without redesigning anything.

Mixed head types within one zone is the most common. A rotor and a spray head deliver water at very different rates, so any run time over waters one and under waters the other. They should never share a zone.

Spacing is second. Heads are designed so the spray from one reaches the next. Spaced further apart, the gaps between them stay dry no matter how long the zone runs.

Pressure is third. Too high produces misting that drifts away; too low leaves heads that do not reach. Both look like coverage problems and neither is fixed by run time.

Then obstructions: shrubs that have grown into the spray pattern, which is extremely common in beds planted at nursery size a decade ago.

What balancing is worth

Balancing is unglamorous and it is one of the highest return items in irrigation, because it reduces water use without reducing what any plant receives.

Everything else in water efficiency involves a trade: less water, different plants, restricted schedules. Improving uniformity is the exception. The dry corner gets what it needed, everywhere else stops being over watered, and total use falls.

It also removes the recurring cost that poor uniformity creates. A zone with a permanently dry corner gets replanted there every couple of years, and the replacement dies for the same reason as the last one.

Frequently asked questions

Why is one part of a zone always dry?

Usually one of three causes: a coverage gap where head spacing does not overlap enough, pressure too low at that point in the line so heads are not throwing their rated distance, or a mismatched nozzle applying at a different rate than its neighbors. All three are physical problems that no amount of extra run time fixes properly.

What is head to head coverage?

It means each head's spray reaches the adjacent heads. Sprinkler distribution is heaviest near the head and lightest at the edge of throw, so overlapping is what produces even application. Spacing heads at their full rated radius without overlap guarantees dry rings between them.

When does a zone need to be split?

When it contains plant material with genuinely different water requirements, most commonly turf and shrubs on the same valve, or sun and deep shade areas together. No schedule satisfies both. Splitting the zone costs money once and saves water every cycle thereafter.
